Surge analysis software for hydrocarbons

Surge analysis software for hydrocarbons

Surge analysis software for hydrocarbons

(OP)
Hello all,
Can anyone please recommend a decent programme that can handle a variety of fluids from crude oil to Jet A1. Typical models are complex systems with pumps, valves surge tanks, etc. I have shortlisted AFT Impulse and Hytran. I'm in two minds about BOS/Fluids. Ability to import from Rebis AutoPIPE would be a bonus.
Since I will have only one shot at this, professional advise from those in the know would be grately appreciated.
Cheers
Alex

RE: Surge analysis software for hydrocarbons

AFT IMpulse with their Chempak add on will give you all the properties of the fluids you have in mind. On top of that AFT are run by engineers for engineers. They understand hydrocarbons mor e than the run of the mill waterhammer guys because of their background from NASA and the consultancy work they do. On top of that they are available for sdesign verification to close out QA.

They have examples of modelling crude oil lines from ship into tank farms etc.

Hytran is strong in single pipelines and has the added benefit of modelling hydro electric turbines.

I would settle for Impulse if I were you. Unfortunately isnt doesnt have the Rebis interface. This isnt such a drawback as in the world of waterhammer studies yoiu dont want all the piping detail. The detail takes up more computing time and doesnt add to the accuracy of the transient analysis. Often you have to change dimensions of short pipes or even delete short pipes altogether to get reasonable run times.

Building complex models for analysis is a "snack" with object selction capability. Design is where the engineering comes in! No software is going to help you there.

I have  been using Impulse for a number of years and find that they are a great outfit. They are the best software house that I use.

I use flowmaster and/or pipeline syudio. Both programs are good but in the expensive end.

Best regards

Morten

RE: Surge analysis software for hydrocarbons

There is a man in the University of Calgary, Canada area who runs a consultancy on mechanical engineering for oil pipelines and teaches some of the terrifying mathematics hydraulics produces who is Cambridge grad and we met in Oct 2003, but I do not know his name, his wife is an archaeologist if that helps. He specializes in your sector question. Try a search mechanical engineering mathematics consultants Calgary. He works US pipeline specialist issues.
