switch gear wire

switch gear wire

switch gear wire

(OP)
what is switch gear wire, is that an "European" term. I gather that it is basically an over-insulated flexible wire for jumpers on MV instrumentation. Is there a US equivalent?

RE: switch gear wire

Type SIS.

Type SIS appears to be 600V rated. Is this what someone would use to hook-up a MV PT in say, inside the HV compartment of a Padmount XFMER?, routed carefully of course.

RE: switch gear wire

One product is called [slang, maybe?] “Natvar rod”—a round, semi-rigid solid-copper conductor with an orange plastic covering.  It was not insulated for phase-to-ground contact, but likely to resist incidental contact in >600V applications.  One use is in metalclad gear for instrument-transformer and arrester jumpers.

Can’t find a link for the material.

RE: switch gear wire

No SIS would not be the wire for VT primary connections.  There is an insulated, but not shielded, conductor used for VT primaries, but I don't have the type at hand.

I have been looking at machine and apparatus wire #8 minimum
good for 5KV. But I remember working with high voltage microwave tubes that used a #14- #10 colored (PFTE?) that was used up to 30kV.

However, I do not think it was that good because I remember showing a tube to a sales rep. He said what is the pretty blue wire for?, shortly before being knocked to his butt.

The tube manufacturer quickly issued saftey bulletin for this!

RE: switch gear wire

This is commonly accomplished with 15kV rated cable from which the shield and semicon have been removed. You could try one of  these also.

The material in §G of http://www.ciic.com/pphlogger/dlcount.php?id=whsalisb&url=http://www.whsalisbury.com/images/catalog.pdf makes decent ‘fully rated’ 15/25/35kV jumpers for use inside metalclad MV gear/unit substations.  Midspan it may be supported by drilled Micarta or FRP sheet, spaced about the same distance as transfomer bushings or switch/breaker poles.  Another means of support are Glastic knobs.
