18 Wheeler Truck Turning Template

18 Wheeler Truck Turning Template

I was asked to use a turning template for a 18 wheeler truck to design a parking layout. In the AASHTO Clasification what kind of truck is an 18 wheeler? Is it a WB-50? Thank you for any help.

18-wheeler is a common term for a semitrailer (tractor trailer vehicle).  WB-50 is one type, 50 refers to the wheelbase distance in feet from the front axle of the tractor to the rear axle of the trailer.  WB-50 is the second smallest of the WB series, so I wouldn't use any less than that and would probably go larger, such as a WB-65.  Templates are included in "A Policy on Geometric Design of Streets and Highways" from AASHTO and should be available from the Federal Highway Administration.

Hi racv2,

Try AutoTurn, with AutoCad or MicroStation.

Thank you for your answer Maury.

I try to get my boss to buy it but AutoTurn cuz I have used it before and he thinks it is a little too expensive.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Be careful with your turning allowances.  For some arking lots, you will need to provide for the turning movements of super-B's and the like (fuel applications, etc).  You may have to crystal ball a bit, but otherwise, I tend to be a little conservative and allow for the longer units.

Check with your state DOT and see what they use. In NY, trucks larger than WB-50's or pup tandems (twin 28 ft trailers) are not allowed general run of the highways, so designing for them  where they won't be allowed is a waste of money.

I'd also suggest asking the client what vehicles they expect.

there is a truck turning template (for entering loading dock) at www.hawsedc.com/gnu/turn.htm
