RE: where is the best place to buy parts?
You might try digikey.com and see what they have in
the way of transistors. Mail order and kind of speedy
in their delivery. Prices aren't too bad either.
http://www.digikey.com/
I've also had good luck with these guys, but their
IC inventory is not as extensive as digikey. They seem
to be very prompt. Lots of tools and supplies.

Haven't done business with these guys in years so
I can't give yea or nay on them but:
http://jameco.com/
best of luck!

Rich has assumed that you are in the US.
Where are you actually located?

RE: where is the best place to buy parts?
Mouser - Good inventory
Allied Electronics - Major Distributer, been around since the '50s
Newark Electronis - similar to Allied.
Jameco - Fair inventory, but has some unique items
Don't forget www.google.com or one of the search engines. If you are planning production, always search for <Last buy> to find if the part is going out of production.
Finally, Look at www.eem.com This is the "electronic engineers master" and lists most companies where parts can be obtained in case you can't find them from the above sources.

New and surplus parts
Allied Electronics http://www.alliedelec.com/
Very good
Arrow Electronics http://www.arrow.com/
Haven't used them in a while
Circuit Specialists http://www.web-tronics.com/
Haven't used them in a while
Digi-Key http://www.digikey.com/
Excellent
Future Electronics http://www.futureelectronics.com/
Haven't used them in a while
Hosfelt Electronics http://www.hosfelt.com/
Sometimes they have things I can't find elsewhere
Jameco http://www.jameco.com
Fair inventory, some unusual parts
JDR Microdevices http://www.jdr.com
Mostly computer stuff, but some components as well
Marlin P Jones http://www.mpja.com
Haven't bought from them in a while.
Newark Electronics http://newark.com
Excellent
I start with Newark, Allied or Digi-Key and go from there.
If I can't even wait one day, I'll try a local supplier or a nearby Radio Shack, but the Shack has almost zero inventory of hardly any parts, like a 741 op amp or a 555 timer, but not much else.
