Low Temp Impact Testing
Low Temp Impact Testing
(OP)
I have to build a liquid nitrogen exchanger -350F design.
I'm using SA240-304.
Question : looking at (Div 1) UHA-51(g) does this exempt you from all impact testing or just base material ?

RE: Low Temp Impact Testing
Exemptions for impact testing; impact testing is not required for the 304 austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel base metal and similar combination welded (304/304) heat affected zones with a minimum design metal temperature (MDMT) of -320 deg F or warmer.
RE: Low Temp Impact Testing
I mentioned UHA 51(g) because my exchanger meets the coincident ratio criteria. I was going to set the design temp @ -350 but reading the code again I can use the lowest attainable temp which is -320.
