Is FPT thread the same as female NPT thread?

RE: Is FPT the same as female NPT thread?

Not exactly.

FPT = Female Pipe Thread and as such I suppose could apply to any female thread i.e. British, German, American, International etc.

NPT = National Pipe Taper (pipe thread specification)is the American tapered standard and as such could apply to either male and/or female components. The gender would normally be desinated separately i.e. male 1/4" NPT, female 1/2" NPT, etc.

Hi generalblr,

Not that I do not believe you, but do you have some kind of reference to back that up, so I can look up on the net? I've asked around at my job and have got a lot of "yes, but I'm not sure", "I think I read that somewhere" and "that would only be logical" answers, so if you are able to expand on that I would be thankful.

RE: Is FPT the same as female NPT thread?

You got me curious.

RE: Is FPT the same as female NPT thread?

I am sorry  but I have not been in this forum for a while:
It is my believe that FPT is kind of a slang (I hope I spelled it correctly),or a short form of female NPT used in the plumbing and steam fitting field. I have used it a lot when ordering materials and i really do not know if it is technical
or bythe book.
A lot of fitting companies use the term to indicate female pipe thread or FNPT, and no one uses straight threads so it is assumable.
similar to: Ask your helper for a screw driver... what will he brings you?... what do you expect him/her to bring you?...
aaare you happy now.
