Archiving AND Retrieving

Archiving AND Retrieving

Archiving AND Retrieving

(OP)
I wish to archive drawings (around 6GB) onto CD. However rather than span the archive across 10 CD's in the standard way, is it possible to write a small program that will section the files into 650 MB chunks allowing each drawing to be referenced and saved to a known CD? I can't believe that no-one else wants to do this but I can't find any info.

RE: Archiving AND Retrieving

Using a large zip can be problematic.  If part of the archive is corrupted, then it's likely that the entire archive is...

What I do with projects (we still use the 8.3 DOS filename format)is a 5 digit project number, and a 3 digit drawing number for example, one of my current project drawings is 01121s01.dwg.  Revision 0 would be named 01121s01.dw0, rev 2, would be 01121s01.dw1, and so forth.  I archive this drawing using zip and the archive is 01121s01.zip.  One of the defaults using right click in 'doze is the filename with .zip extension.  In this manner all revisions and the current 01121s01.d?? are archived into 01121s01.zip. In this manner, the zip file sizes are kept manageable and at worst, you loose a single drawing and revisions (hasn't happened yet, but I'm hoping <G>).

You might try something like the above, but using longer file names or whatever; we use the 8.3 format to be consistent with the last 15 years of drawings.

I'd like to modify my previous question and split it into two parts. The first is a question as to whether using unix and a tar archiving utility I can compress a block of files AND split them into discreet 650MB chunks without one chunk being reliant on the other (i.e. the archive is not spanned across a set of disks). Unfortunately with over 80,000 drawings, doing each one manually is not feasible. Alternatively without compression is there some software which will automatically split the directory into 650 MB chunks which we can then save CD?

RE: Archiving AND Retrieving

Dear Sgolds,
what is the approx. file size of each drawing?  This will play a crucial factor.
I would not suggest tar as an utility for compressing the files.
If you give me a description of the environment that you work in I might be able to help you.
