can anyone help me im trying to create a model with a mirror / polished chrome finish to make it look as realistic as possible can anyone give me a tip or solution please

What version of SolidWorks are you using?  Do you have PhotoWorks add-in?

If you are not using SW04 or do not have PhotoWorks, you are limited to what material effects you can simulate natively in SW.

I find setting part shading colors of RGB to 243,243,243 with set to Hue: 160, Sat: 0 and Lum: 229 to work well to simulate chrome.  

Add to this a change of your settings in your Lighting folder (Color: white, Intensity Ambient: .10) and your Basic Light (Color: white, Ambient: 0, Brightness: .90, Specularity: .60) and Direction Long:-18.4deg, Lat:17.5deg.

I'm sure someone else will come along for PhotoShop settings.

sorry i forgot to say im using (trying to use ) solidworks 2004 with all plugins ( toolbox - photoworks etc)

I have to give credit to Brian Hill on this one:
Hello Scott,

There are 3 keys to making a chrome material:

1) On the Illumination tab of the material set the reflectivity (or mirror) up to it's highest setting

2) set the material color to Black.  Strange but true.  Chrome things are really almost always 100% black.  It's their reflectivity that make them appear other colors.

3) MOST IMPORTANT - have something to reflect in the chrome.  This can easily be done by adding an image-based material to a spherical 'environment' scene wall - or just adding other things into the scene to reflect in the object.  If you check out the toaster on my site the key is the room that is reflecting in it.  this is really just a photo I found of a kitchen that I turned into a material in PW2 and put on the spherical environment of the scene.

Thank you for the info ( but been new to this program ) i cannot find the tab you mention
Plus is it possible to display the chrome effect in the normal drawing view window ? i have seen inventor 7 models with a material(black chrome)effect displayed in the normal drawing / building / editing model window . And so far the material effect is atm far better than what i have seen in sw 2004 ?

You have to give the part a type of material, then the Illumination tab is avaialble.

If you want to see Chrome all the time then you have to have the ability of Real View and only a handful of cards out there supports RV graphics. But that would be the way to see it in SW all the time.

Photoworks Chrome is only for PW.
