Searching for Files?

Searching for Files?

Searching for Files?

(OP)
Does anyone know how to search for files faster?  I have unselected show thumbnail graphics in Windows Explorer, yet it takes Explorer too long to identify each file when scrolling thru our library containing hundreds of parts.  Are there any additional settings within Windows XP that can be unselected or changed? I enjoy using this method due to the preview capability.

RE: Searching for Files?

Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance - Settings - Visual Effects

Select Custom

Uncheck everything in the list EXCEPT:

The last one "Use visual Styles for windows and buttons" (makes XP look like XP instead of 2000)

The fourth from last "use backgraound images for each folder".

Neither of these two seems to cost CPU time.

Everything else is grabbing CPU time for fancy graphic stuff you don't need and probably don't even notice.  For example:  why do you need your CPU calculating shadows on your pointer in real time, all the time the mouse is moving!!!!!? You would think they would offload this crap at least to the graphics board, but noooooo....  thanks a lot Mr Bill!

You would be surprised how much this will speed up your system in general.  Try just opening Word, Excel, IE, etc. before you do it and again after - see the difference.  We have done this to all our systems.  After I did it on our home system, I heard my wife let out an audible "wow" followed by "what the heck did you do to the computer?".

frogs,

If you know the name of the file, when Explorer shows the icons, start typing the name of the file and Windoze will jump to files that have the same starting letters.
