Huge mistake combining parts

Huge mistake combining parts

Huge mistake combining parts

(OP)
It looks like I destroyed my model-

Starting with one section of a cylinder head, I made 4 copies of it as an assembly, combined the parts, and then saved it back to the original part. Didn't think to rename it or backup the original.

Now I have a complete cylinder head, but all the sketches and features to make it are gone. Have they been lost forever?

Second, the origin of the part has moved. I can't find a way to move the part to the original drawing origin or relocate the origin on the part. It is making it difficult to manipulate the part in an assembly.

Is there any hope to fix this? Guess I have learned a hard lesson.

Thanks,
John Woodward

RE: Huge mistake combining parts

SW has an automatic backup feature. Did you disable it in your setup? If not there should be a backup somewhere. Check the "Tools > Options > System Options > Backups" for a location.

Good Luck.

RE: Huge mistake combining parts

Just re-read your post & am now confused, so I have some questions:-

1) Did you make the 4 copies of the head section as a multi-body part (i.e. 4 or 5 pieces total)? If so, how did you copy the section?

2) Did you start a new assy & insert the head section 4 times? If so, how did you Combine them?

It started with one section of the head, the one that has all the sketches and extrusions. I opened a new assembly and inserted 4 copies of the head section. These were mated together and then I did a combine.

I intended to make a mult-body part but I think it went wrong. I took this combined assembly and saved it as a part, only I kept the name of the original section instead of using a new name. Thus, the original section got overwritten. The sketches and extrusions are no where to be found.

Checked the backup file- unfortunately it is a copy of the last save.

RE: Huge mistake combining parts

Oops ... sounds like you are SOL!

BTW: You did not need to start an assy to create extra copies of the head section. A simple Linear Pattern with the Merge switch on (in SW04) or followed by Combine (in SW03) would have done the trick.

Better luck next time ... & don't forget to Backup
