Ideal room air temperature for data center

Ideal room air temperature for data center

Ideal room air temperature for data center

does anybody know what should be the ideal room air temperature a cooling system has to keep in a data center in order to avoid a computer equipment damage ?
I would appreciate very much a promtly reply.

RE: Ideal room air temperature for data center

I don't know if there's a one-size-fits-all answer. Usually see about 62-68°F. Want to avoid too high a humidity for condensation/corrosion issues and avoid too low for static shock... Best thing would be to lay out all the environmental requirements from all the O&M manuals for the protected equipment and find a control band that suits as many as possible.

Here are usual spec:
Air conditioning equipment must be capable of producing recommended design conditions of 72°F plus or minus 21/2°F dry bulb and 48 plus or minus 5% relative humidity and function within operational limits of 68°F to 78°F dry bulb and 40% to 60% relative humidity. To meet system availability and flexibility requirements, equipment must provide complete control 24 hrs per day, seven days per week.

From "1999 ASHRAE Handbook, HVAC Applications, Chapter 16" Tables 1&2 may help you.More detailed information can be found in chapter 16.As Cheasbean and imok state , main considerations are humidity rate, temperation variations and dust protection (filteration and maintaining positive pressure).Of course ,System selection is the most important thing for a proper design.

Table 1 Typical Computer Room Design Conditions

Condition                            Recommended Level

Temperature control range              22ºC ± 1ºC
Relative humidity control range        50 ± 5%
Filtration quality(b)                  45%, min. 20%

These conditions are typical of those recommended by most computer equipment manufacturers.
(b)From ASHRAE Standard 52.1 dust-spot efficiency test.

Table 2 Design Conditions for Air Supply Direct to Computer Equipment

Condition                               Recommended Level

Temperature                 As required for heat dissipation
Relative humidity           Maximum 65
Filtration quality          45% minimum

ercanbaser - It's nice when someone does the homework like that (as opposed to my post above). Nice work

thanks a lot , all you guys for your valuable answers.

RE: Ideal room air temperature for data center

hi,

Data centre's are energy beast's,
from past experience, operating costs
in the end will probably drive the end
user to increase the db temp. to try
and save energy.

Data centres that were orginially
designed (as mentioned by ercanbaser) for
21 deg C, 50% - and were subsquently modified
with the approval of the data equipment
manufacturer, for 26 deg C db - saving millions
of dollars per year.

Don't forget that ashrae guide is not engraved
in stone, there are only guidelines. Choose
your conditions carefully to suit your
application.

In your case it may not be possible to
adopt a higher design, engineering is
a creative endeavour, don't let fixed
ashrae guideline dictate your design.

at the end of the day the owner will
thank you.

cheers,
