Hello there just stumbled across this great forum and have my first question allready. today i have  been trying to repair an aluminum casting whisT im to belive is a 5% magnesium casting .. i have been trying to repair it with a 5356 5% magnesium Welding rod and  using pureshield argon 99% pure gas... it seems the parent material doesnt like this does anyone have any suggestions on a better/more suitable rod/gas combination to try ?? any help would be greatly appriecated.. Darren

RE: welding ali castings.

darrenG;
1.) Providing the forum with the specific Al alloy would help in your selection of filler metals.

2.) Try adding helium to your shielding, it will increase arc voltage and heat input to your Al casting. Try also preheating (not excessively) your part. How is the part being prepared prior to welding? What process are you using?

3.) Finally, what is it specifically the material "...dosen't like..."?  Is it difficult to adhere filler metal to, contamination, etc.

RE: welding ali castings.

If the gas is 99% argon, 1% oxygen, that is a problem.  Use 100% argon.
