Can anybody give me some explanation between ISDX, ASX , CDRS, Pro Surface module, ICEM Surf. I heard alot of term regarding all this surface modelling tools, but till now i dont know which exacly tool is the one i want. Currenly i am working at a plastic product company which require various type of surface modelling .
Is it CATIA the best tool in surface modelling ? How about proengineer surface module ?

Thanks

RE: Surface modelling tools

I've been using pro/surfaces for about 4 years now and find you can do almost anything you want with it.

RE: Surface modelling tools

CDRS and ICEM surf are seperate software packages. I do not know much about them but the examples I have seen from them are automotive.

ASX is the traditional surfacing package. ISDX is a new freeform package that makes it easier to make complex shapes.

Pro/E with ASX has been very strong in plastic part design for years many people are switching to ISDX. If you are buying new software go ahead and get ISDX because it includes ASX. Motorola, Palm, Mitsubishi (Trium), Panasonic and several other use Pro for cell phones.  You will find a very strong base of molders that have Pro/E in house and are good at using it. (however, alot of them use something else for the tool paths and tool design)

A new program that people are talking about and is <$1,000 is Rhino.

RE: Surface modelling tools

As ProEpro has mentioned, CDRS and ICEM surf are separate packages that are offered through most Pro/E resellers.

These software packages are typically used by industrial designers.  Although I have never used ICEM, I have heard that not a lot of people use it, primarily because the software and training is expensive, and apparently training course is quite long (almost 2 weeks!) which makes me wonder if it is intuitive or "user-friendly".

CDRS is a good tool for surfacing, you can import scanned images in order to provide a template to create your models.  This is one example of the advantages of CDRS for surfacing.

The new ISDX (Interactive Surface Design Extension) for 2001, basically takes some of the more commonly used tools in CDRS and incorporates them into Pro/E.  The advantage to this is that you don't have to switch from one software to the other.  Keep in mind that this includes only some parts of CDRS in Pro, they are not completely integrated.

Hope this helps.
