Cutting PVC with Wire

Cutting PVC with Wire

(OP)
Can anyone there with experience in machining or cutting of PVC help me with a problem I have. The situation is as follows, we have a manufacturing process where a wire is pulled through PVC to cut it. The problem I have is that the wire pulling tends to vary between removing a slug of material equal to the wire diameter (ideal required behavior) and tearing or ripping through (not desired behavior).

What material properties control the cutting or ripping behavior of the PVC?
Are there any good references to help me with analysis of the cutting process?
