DC Current Transducer
DC Current Transducer
(OP)
Can anyone recommend a DC current transducer that can measure up to 100 Amps (1% accuracy) and operates off of 125 VDC or 24 VDC? (125 VDC is preferable) The required output is 4-20 mA.
I'm looking for something that is fairly sturdy and can be mounted to a backplane in a small NEMA Type 12 enlosure.
I'm currently looking at CR-Magnetics. They seem to do what I want, but appear to be less robust than I'd like.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Could you adapt a traditional shunt?
That is a calibrated low resistance bridge that works connected in series with the DC current you want to monitor. The output will be a drop in millivolts directly proportional to the current, instead of milliamperes.
Change in temperature will reduce accuracy so keep it ventilated.

LEM-HEME in Europe manufacture a number of transducers which should meet your requirements.
I have found these transducers work very well when sensing current on conductors which do not experience high dv/dt relative to earth. In high dv/dt applications, they suffer from capacitive voltage coupling into the sensor which manifests itself as an addition to the sensor output, although this too can be overcome with judicious use of electrostatic shielding, or by sensing on an 'earthy' conductor.

We used some of their products and found them ok, but very easy to damage electrically if the installation wasn't done correctly. Incorrect installation was our fault completely, but in the real world this sort of thing does happen even to careful commissioning engineers. The LEM products are, in my experience, more forgiving of abuse.

I have frequently used the LEM current transformers and have found always them reliable and robust.
