I-Deas 8 XP installation
I-Deas 8 XP installation
(OP)
Hi,
i've recently installed the above on XP and despite spending many years as an Ideas sys admin, I can't get over this problem:
The application fails to start. The command prompt stops at "You are running Ideas with the OGL driver" as I would expect but nothing happens after that. I've checked everything twice and all seems fine.
I've tried running in X3D to no avail.
Any ideas?

RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
'and' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
C:\Documents is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I think I know what the problem is but I do not know how to solve it.
I have a folder called C:\Documents and settings which obviously has spaces between words and IDEAS does not recognize spaces so in licutil lmgrd I put C:\Documents and settings inside quotation marks like this "C:\Documents and settings" and it did not work. So i tried to rename C:\Documents and settings to C:\Documentsandsettings with no spaces but XP is telling me this folder is a system folder and it can not be moved or renamed. One or more of the enviroment variables are pointing to C:\Documents and settings and IDEAS can not read that folder because of spaces between words. Under system properties-advanced-enviroment variables there is nothing that refers to IDEAS. So I do not know where the enviroment variables for IDEAS 10 that points to C:\Documents and settings are? which file has enviroment variables that points to C:\Documents and settings ?
Any IDEAS? please
thanks
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
feadude, I had the same problem initially, but I overcame this by moving the home directory locations in the param file.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I am not a system administrator but rather an engineer that is trying to install IDEAS 10 in my home pc for FEA analysis, so I do not know much about the IDEAS installation. When you say "moving the home directory locations in the param file." can you please elaborate on this and give the step by step instructions on what I should do. I appreciate your help in advance.
Thank you
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
You can try to download or update your display driver. It might helps.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Can any one please give me the exact name of the param file that specifies the home directory locations?
There are several param files?
Thank you all
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Options, Preference, Data Management.
Then change the User file Directory and Scratch File Directory.
As a suggestion create two clean folders under Team, something like Model_Files & Scratch_Files, then piont at these. It helps house keeping if these are separate folders.
Another suggestion is to ceate a Start_In folder under Team also and modify the Icon or Menu pick that invokes I-DEAS to start in that folder so that this becomes your default create folder for plot files, translation files etc. Without this I-DEAS is a very untidy system for leaving odd files in all sorts of places.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I can not get to Options, Preference, Data Management.
I tried ur other suggestions and they did not work.
After what I mentioned above this is what I get:
internal security error : -97
you can not connect to the IDEAS flexlm lock server. please review your license file and resource locking configuration.
Why I-DEAS is so hard to install?
Thank you RCDLtd
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
DataMgmt.UserDirectory: c:\My Documents
Edit them to reflect where you want the ideas files to be saved.
Hope this helps.
Wish someone could help me!
My display driver is the latest version.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I did not find c:\My Documents in the ideas_param10 file but at the end of the file this is what it says:
! NOTE: Setup could not properly place the following settings.
! in the parameter file. They may have been introduced manually
! by your administrator or by default they may be commented out
! in the template parameter file.
! If this parameter file was imported from a UNIX version parameter
! file, there may be extraneous setting that are not needed on Windows
Team.ConfigFile: C:\Team\Master\Config\Team.cfg
Team.MasterName: My Team
Team.ScratchDirectory: C:\Team\Scratch
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Try checking through the param file for any reference to c:\documents and settings as this is the equivalent of my documents on XP. The lines you are looking for refer to the installation of team data manager so the lines will usually start Team.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I checked the param file . There are no references to:
c:\documents and settings
It still does not work.
I still can not get rid of :
'and' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
C:\Documents is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I know it is because I-DEAS does not recognize spaces but XP does.
Is My team the same as My Documents?
For some reason ideas_param10 is also saved in My Documents after the malfunction even though it is located in C:\Team\Master\Config\ideas_param10.dat
thank you all for your help
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Not sure if I can help, but will try.
First, have you checked for any err*.out files to see if they are giving any clues on what's going on? Any other logs or whatnot being spit out (either b4 the hang or after you kill the processes)?
Second, are you running XP with the 'new' interface or the 'old' (ie, Win2k)? IMS8 came out b4 XP if I recall, and may not like the changes MS made...just a guess.
Third, reboot the machine, give it a few minutes, and then check to see which processes are running. Then start I-DEAS and see what happens (and tell me if nothing else helps).
Finally, be sure to check for any windows that may pop-under any other windows on the screen, just in case

RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Thanks for trying,
The error files just contain the ^C command which is presumably written when I close the command window.
No other logs or owt, except the .STOP files as usual.
XP running in W2k mode.
Rebooting etc. makes no difference.
When it is supposed to be running, the normal ideas processes are running according to task manager. It seems to me that the program is running, but the display window is not functioning.
I am used to running Ideas under a window manager in 2000 (Exceed). So I can't figure out why it won't display correctly.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Last I knew, I-DEAS no longer uses Exceed (now native windows gui), so if you installed Exceed (or tried or had from previous release) that may be causing issues.
Otherwise, it sounds like it might be displaying to the wrong device or something (do you have a dual-head capable card, maybe that confused it?)
Actually, I also just noticed the reference above to "My Documents". I don't think I-DEAS handles spaces in names very well, so try getting rid of those, and maybe will resolve.
Let me know if this helps.

RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I've resolved the My Documents issue.
Single display device.
This has become a personal challenge!
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
I hear that
what about a security setting in XP keeping it from popping a window or similar (guessing here)? I've seen similar behavior on Unix when the 'display to machine' variable wasn't set properly, but have never had a problem with that on Windows.
are you using the XP firewall maybe? are the license logs providing any clues? (under ...\sec)
what graphics card are u running (maybe try X3d to eliminate that variable)? Are you on the latest drivers (not usually an issue for this package, but possible)?

BTW, feadude, see your original thread, as I had a thought from above.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
No security issues that I know of could do that.
I've tried disabling my firewalls. No clues in the license logs.
I seem unable to run in X3D, no matter what I do, it trys to run OGL... This could be it...
There is an env variable set to use software OGL, which I have tried unsetting as well.
I am using the latest drivers...
It's a Geforce FX 5200 Nvidia card. I've run ideas on much less before, I know it's not supported, but this has never been a problem before.
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Unix is inherently secure...you have to tell it to allow you to display to it's own screen, and if your ENV varbs don't get set (or are incorrect), it hangs (not allowed to pop a window). Not likely the case here, but only time I can remember it doing that...thought worth asking.
Anyway, you should be able to force it into X3D by modifying (a copy of) the OGL icon, by changing the -dogl to -dx3d (the -d is short for 'device' of which OGL and X3D the only options I'm aware of).
Try that, and let me know.

RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
Hmmm...
ps. I was a Unix sysadmin for 6 years. ;)
Thanks for taking the time to try to help :)
RE: I-Deas 8 XP installation
since IMS8 likely didn't support XP (as IMS9 only supports it provisionally), I think that Ben may have been on the right track above.
have you tried setting the compatibility for ALL the various exe's/script's/etc, or only some?
Also, am assuming, but did you check the original 'home directory' location(s) to see if there were any files that may have been left behind? [like in C:\Documents and Settings\ or where-ever]
