Who makes the best drill?

Who makes the best drill?

I do a lot of hole drilling and was curious what you folks felt was the best drill company as far as quality and performance.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

RE: Who makes the best drill?

No one company can provide the best drill. Material, hole tolerance, depth of hole, machine being used, type of coolant and quantity of holes to be drilled will effect the drill choice.
We use several manufactures and types of drills. Carbide insert are great for larger holes in most materials, but different insert shapes and configuration have a major impact on performance. Coating work well on higher volume work, but may not be justifiable all drilling applications. Flute geometry is another area that is application driven. When looking at different manufactures styles, remember they are in the business to sell tools, so some of the information provided will tend to be to their benefit.

It's really hard to go wrong with guhring.

Hello ornerynorsk,

From my hole drilling experience, I have to say you are right. We seem to have our best results with Guhring. I even send my dull bits to them for reconditioning. We have also started using their taps and endmills. From what I understand, Guhring manufactures their own carbides and they also do their own heat treating on the HSS/HSCO stuff. We were using Balax taps to tap Inconel 718, but we tested the Guhring powdered metal tap with TiCN coating and got 4 times more holes with a 1/4-28 tap.

Thanks for the reply
