I have a older Gateway solo computer r0. it has a cd rom drive on it. when insert a cd the computer does nothing. when i go to windows explorer it tells me: drive not ready, retry or cancel.
under device manger the driver is working fine for the cd rom, it also has a spot for a cd rom controller? it is not working fine. i am assuming that i need t update the controller. but i am not real sure please help

RE: gateway solo problem

On my Solo 1200 (August 2001) (this is a laptop we're talking about, right?), sometimes I have to press the frame of the CD drive into the PC chassis to get it to work. Just a contact thing. Assuming yours is removable the way mine is, release the catch underneath, move it out an inch, then reseat it and try again.

My Solo has been ok for what it is, but the Windows ME it came with is definitely not one of MS's better ideas. Lately the thing hangs during boot, trying to get the Explorer or something else to respond. One or more reboots are needed to get it to come up cleanly. Any thoughts, short of upgrading to Win 2000? Please, please, don't tell me to go to XP!

thanks i have tried that a few times. i know it get power because if you open it the cd is spininng. it is running windows 95.

RE: gateway solo problem

Try going into the device manager and uninstall the cd rom? Remove the device then plug it back in. It should re-recognize the device.
