Wire size comparative chart

Wire size comparative chart

Wire size comparative chart

(OP)
I'm working for an engineer battalion in stationed in Baghdad working on reconstruction.  I need a handy wire size comparison chart relating the common AWG to the sizes usually found here (6mm^2, 10mm^2, etc.)  I don't have many technical books and I can't really get books or journals very fast over here so references to those won't help me now.  We could only really bring our battle rattle.  But if any of you know of a chart online somewhere I would appreciate it.  I need it to cover sizes from #18 AWG through 4/0 if possible.  Thanks for your help!

RE: Wire size comparative chart

Steve,
The chart is available on ABB's web site, however you will have to search for it as I cannot remember just where it is located.

RE: Wire size comparative chart

Suggestion: Some approximations will be needed since the sq mm sizes are standardized just like AWG sizes. Use the closest bigger sq mm size to stay on the safe side.
It appears that one of the above links is practical, namely:
http://www.lexproducts.com/wireconv.htm
Also, there are some official guidelines available: e.g.

note:ampacity is for copper wire

note:CALC US (cm): is millimeter square converted to U.S. circular mils

(mm2) is Millimeter squared
(mm) is circular mil
US (mm2) is circular Mil converted to millimeter square

note:European designation of wire: example 3x70+1x35 means that the circuit is multi-conductor cable containing three conductoRs, each 70 sq mm in size and a ground wire of 35 sq mm. this 200 amp cicuit is equivalent to our 3/0 cable with one number 1 ground conductor

My small bit to help our Guys over there.

Good Luck

RE: Wire size comparative chart

correction to my last posting:Under the notes- should be (cm) is circular mil instead of (mm)is circular mil

RE: Wire size comparative chart

Suggestion to the previous posting: It is better to use cmil and kcmil for circular mils and kilocircular mils since cm normally stands for the centimeter.

RE: Wire size comparative chart

I was trying to get the information to fit on the page as quickly as I could. But it is a good point.

RE: Wire size comparative chart

If you email me at rod@mcmahon.co.nz I will send you an Excel spread sheet converter that sizes cables using all mm2 sizing
