PWHT

PWHT

(OP)
I would like to know if in ASME 8 or ASME 9, it is clearly described that a pwht is required after welding  for carbon steel alloy.
In fact I have to do a repair on a cast casing  PN°1 GN° 1,the piece is completly machined, and if I have to do a pwht I think it will be detrimental for the piece!
Thanks for your help.

RE: PWHT

PWHT is not mandatory under normal circumstance.
Firstly ASME SEC 9 does not specify whether your component requires PWHT or not, Sec 9 helps you to crystalise your Welding procedures and serves you as to whether the procedure qualification you have supports your wps or not. Also it gives you guidelines as to check  whether the welder is ok for the given process in a given position based on his Welder Perfomance record (Somuch for confusion)

Sec 8 gives you the guidelines (It is a rule in USA) as to the circumstances which warrents PWHT. You may refer to UCS 56, UW 40 and UW2 of asme sec 8 div 1 (these are the some of the basic relevant clauses which would guide you into taking the decision whether PWHT is recommended.

Now why are you refering to Sec 8, is it a pressure vessel component?

More details are required for further information

Good Luck

Thank you for your answer. It's not a pressure vessel strictly according to ASME VIII.It's a  casing for a centrifugal pump according to API .
Code API says that all welding opération sall be according to ASME IX and all non destructive tests according to ASME VIII div 1.
For me it's difficult to understand what we have to do, because we supply with ASTM ( A216WCB or A352LCB)pressure part, all welding opérations are done by the supplier with ASTM A488, in our factory we have to weld some pipes on the cast casing according to ASME IX and ASME VIII!
