Single frequency generator

Single frequency generator

Single frequency generator

(OP)
Hello,

I'm looking to either build or purchase a device that simulates a signal from an 802.11b WLAN card.  Does anyone know of any companies that supply this type product?  Does anyone know of any simple solutions for building this type of generator?

Basically, I am doing some testing with the wireless technology (DSSS) and I just want to generate a sinusoidal signal at a constant frequency in the 2-3 GHz range with an output power of 15-25 dBm (ideally a standard wireless signal generator of 2.442 GHz at 15 dBm).  I will then be connecting an omni-directional antenna (5 dBi) to the RF output and monitor the generated signal with a spectrum analyzer for attenuation losses.  It is preferred that the device is battery powered and handheld.

The generator does not need to have variable frequency or variable output power as long as the signal is stable.

I would appreciate any ideas or tips.

Thanks,

Kevin

Why a simulator and not the real thing?  You should be able to force a regular WLAN card into some sort of repetitious function.

IRStuff,

I have tried to do some testing using just the "real thing" and have found that it is quite difficult to monitor the signal at the low power levels I want to read.  This problem is mainly due to the constant shifting in the frequency of a DSSS signal.

I would like to concentrate on a single frequency with constant transmission and not a pulsed transmission.  This makes capturing of the frequency spectrum for the signal much quicker and easier.

I have already thought about reprogramming the card to transmit at a single frequency, but I don't have much of a programming background and would not know where to start.

But, if there is an easy way to force the WLAN into transmitting a single frequency signal, I am open to your ideas.

Thanks for the reply.

Kevin
