Worm Gear Effective Face Width

Worm Gear Effective Face Width

(OP)
I'm finishing a worm gearbox design and am wondering about the face width and effective face width of the worm gear.

In my Handbook of Practical Gear Design it says "not to exceed 2/3 of the worm pitch diameter for effective face width (Fe)". Why is this? Can I not use the full face width from below for tooth strength?

The machinery handbook says the Face Width (not effective face width) can be (C^.875)/3 (C is center distance).
