Contractor installed the garage door lintel 3" too low and now has to remove the bottom 3" of the header beam. Current header is a 32" deep x 8" wide masonry header with a ublock on top with a #5 and a 8" hollow pre-cast lintel with a #5 in the bottom. The whole thing is grouted solid. Since the 3" to be removed includes the bottom #5 rebar, our only options are to reinforce the bottom of the header. Building has been dry-walled and stuccoed and is awaiting CO. Uniform unfactored load on the beam (including self-weight) is 680 PLF over 16' opening.

Unfortunately this situation happens regularly so we are trying to formulate a list of fixes based on economics and loading.

Options being considered are to reinforce with a:
1. Steel flitch plate on the inside only. Plate to take entire moment (21.8 k-ft).
2. PT LVL of LVL with felt between masonry & wood. LVL to take entire moment.
3. Double steel angles (one each side) along bottom of the beam. Design as composite concrete-steel.
4. What you got?

We are also considering other options such as personnel elimination (with extreme prejudice) when this reoccurs with the same super/shell contractor.

For this situation I likely would order to drill deep upwards a number of 12 mm to be glued anchors, then on them I would pass upwards a tension plate to be glued by epoxy to a special mortar created new surface. Then nuts can be added. You can embellish it with some welded profile.

Both the special mortar and epoxy are likely to successfully sustain the whole of the required shear transfer forces.
