welding 304 to 9% Ni steel

(OP)
How can you weld a large pipe of stainless steel (304) into a 9% Ni steel container. Is this possible, do you need special welding rods, How do you account for thermal expansion and crimp?
Thanks in advance

RE: welding 304 to 9% Ni steel

A good source of information can

"Welding Stainless and 9% Nickel Steel Cryogenic Vessels" by Avery and Parsons, the Weld Journal Nov 95. Order on nidi website  - search 9% Nickel for link.

For more data on Nickel Steels, visit the web site of the Nickel Development Institute. http://www.nidi.org/

RE: welding 304 to 9% Ni steel

You can weld it with ERNiCr-3 / ENiCrFe-3 fillers (Inconel 82 types).

RE: welding 304 to 9% Ni steel

Or ENiCrFe-1 (e.g., Inconel 132)
