BOM Questions

BOM Questions

BOM Questions

(OP)
I'm in the exploratory phase of learning SWX. In playing with BOM's, I've come up with a couple questions that I can't find answers to.

1) On the Insert->Tables menu in my drawing, the Excel-based BOM is grayed out. Any ideas why? The standard BOM seems to perform as expected.

2) The part number column on the BOM always shows the .sldprt file name, even when I've assigned a value to the custom property PartNo. Can this be changed?

3) When I add a new column to my BOM, and then go to BOM Contents, I'm able to select the new cells but not put anything into them.

If it matters, I'm running SWX 2k4 sp 1 (Professional Office version).

I've hunted through the help files ... but I still, haven't found, what I'm looking for... {in my best Bono imitation}

RE: BOM Questions

I am not sure on some of your issues but I'll take a stab at question 2.  Open up a file that is in the BOM. Now click on the configuration manager tab. Right click on the configuration, if you have no other configs this will be the default, next select properties. At the bottom of this dialogue box you will find the option of choosing how the part name is displayed in the BOM.  It sound as if you will want to select user defined. So part no in custom properties does not affect the BOM (but does help in linking to your titleblock), however custom prop description does work with the BOM.

RE: BOM Questions

Binary.

Question #1) You need to make a view “active” by highlighting it, then when you go to insert>tables the Excel based BOM will work.

Question #3) Sorry I can’t answer at present. I have not familiarized myself with the new SW2004 version of BOM. Perhaps someone else can pitch in here.

RE: BOM Questions

Maybe a dumb question....but do you have Excel loaded on your machine?

CorBlimeyLimey:

Perhaps a dumb question but you're "talking" to somebody who can be incredibly dumb sometimes. Fortunately, this isn't one of 'em. Excel is installed.

It turns out that Areva is right on.

Areva:

Thanks, Eddy. WRT #3, I believe that the "contents" are just a read-only display. I did get them to display properly by using the column properties in the Feature Manager.

RE: BOM Questions

Question 3) You have to link information into the cells. Example - you make column of say "Length"

You have to add a Length Property in your part and you have to give it a value.

Once you do that and the link is established. It will populate the BOM.
