Heat Transfer

(OP)
I need some one to help me here. I have a 6 inch line it takes approx 34 bbl per 1000 feet to displace it. The temp of the line is about 10C I am pumping oil down it for 1500 meteres at 70C how long will it take for the oil to reach the pipe line temp if i am pumping at a rate of 3 bbls per minute what will the temp be if when the oil gets to the end. If everything remains constant-pumping pressure 500 kpa pumping temp 70 c line temp 10 c Thanks for any help.

RE: Heat Transfer

i would insulate the pipe... at 10C the oil (you did not specify the quality... crude, bunker oil?) may become so viscous that it would be impossible to pump.

RE: Heat Transfer

The flow velocity would be about 0.4 m/s for a sch 40 pipe. Thus the fuel would reside in the pipe for about an hour.  I think (spanish-speaking?) abeltio is absolutely right in that you must consider the type of oil being pumped and the pipe conditions and surroundings. At the wall temperature mentioned one may even have a deposition of wax if the pumped oil has a high pour point. Wax, could then act as a thermal insulator and increase the friction drop. Can you give more details ?
