PSV Fire Case Scenarios

PSV Fire Case Scenarios

PSV Fire Case Scenarios

(OP)
Does anyone know of a document (e.g., article, book, reference) that explicitly addresses the method of assessing the different fire cases for safety relief valves? This document needs to have a rationale or set of criteria that helps the process engineer determine which scenario(s) are applicable to his/her PSV situation. I'm aware of API 520, API 521, and API 2000. I could be mistaken, but I don't recall any part in them that deals specifically with describing different fire case scenarios that can assist in setting the correct scenarios for a particular situation.

RE: PSV Fire Case Scenarios

I don't know if this helps, but API-2000 and NFPA 30 both deal with that pool fire scenario as a basic starting point.  Thereafter, both provide heat input reduction factors based upon level of protection... foam, insulation, monitors, drainage, etc.

Following article can be useful:

Wing Y. Wong, "Fires, Vessels and the Pressure Relief Valve", Chemical Engineering, May 2000, pages 84-92.

Thanks very much to SteveBraune and Guidoo. These are good leads to a better understanding of the analyzing of fire cases. I guess I was also expecting some kind of guide from API, ASME, or NFPA that was more explicit about scenarios. What you have given me is good to use, but it is not an "official" guideline that is citable. Maybe there are none.

NFPA 59 section 7.2.5 provides calculation methods to determine pressure relieving capacity and environmental factors required for fire exposure.

RE: PSV Fire Case Scenarios

i posted a question that has parallels to yours just a few moments ago.  i am attempting to size vents for process tanks and vessels in a nuclear processing facility, where the fire exposure to the vessels are minimal.  therefore, i am considering applying a correction factor to the API 521 formula (Q= 21,000FA e.82).  the API formula must be based on a worst case fuel type (high heat of combustion). If I can find out what that fuel is, I should be able to correct for another combustible by multiplying the formula by a ratio of the heat of combustion values.

any thoughts?

I don't know if I can help but I will be on the lookout for an answer.

I'v never anser question like that but i think it more helpful to contact saftey offeciers"saftey company advice " or inspection house. i'd love to hear the received data. thank you for this.
