Linear Motor Drive design guidelines

Linear Motor Drive design guidelines

Linear Motor Drive design guidelines

(OP)
We are looking for design guidelines for designing a precision drive for a linear motor. The motor will be driving a laser scanning head which will image printing plates. Motor stroke is about 24", 10# inertial load, 3# friction, scanning speed about 1 in/sec, return speed ~ 5 in/sec.

Variations in drag forces will come from the rail system, cables, and acceleration, etc.

We plan to use an ironless motor similar to the Anorad LEM-S-1 series, running on a THK/NSK rail and using a Renishaw linear encoder for feedback. The motor is a triphase  brushless type.

We have done various motor designs in that past (DC brushless (for air bearing rotary), DC brush, microstepper, AC synchronous, but never CC brushless for a linear motor.

The questions are:

Is there any good literature on the subject? Where can we find it?
What are the basic differences from a rotary drive?
Are there any special precautions to take given the very high accuracy and smoothness requirements
How best to deal with commutation?

Trying not to re-invent the wheel. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
