California PE Qualificaiton for a UK Civil Engineer

(OP)
Hello

I am a UK civil engineer currently working in the US.  I am interested as to whether I can qualify to take a PE exam in Civil Engineering for the state of Claifornia. If so, how long will it take before I can sit the exam?

I have an undergraduate degree in Civil Enigneering, a PhD (4 years post graduate experience), 5 years working in an engineering consultancy in the UK and 7 months experience here in the US.

many thanks

Steve

See the website: http://www.dca.ca.gov/pels/laws.htm

and particular, section 6751.2. "Foreign applicants" of the Professional Engineers Act.

That's the appropriate reference.  Now for the "personal perspective" :
  1. If you are already licensed in the U.S. in another jurisdiction, then the registration process seems to go a little easier.
  2. If your education was from institutions that are recognized by NCEE the process is easier.
  3. If your five years work for a U.S. firm in the U.K. included supervision by an engineer licensed in the U.S. (but not California) - and will vouch for your abilities - then the process will go easier.
  4. If your five years work for a U.S. firm in the U.K. included supervision by an engineer licensed in California - and will vouch for your abilities - then the process will go much easier.
  5. Expect to get no credit for those five years of work if the work was not supervised by an engineer licensed in the U.S.
I hope this helps you manage your expectations -
