Gas coolers

Gas coolers

Gas coolers

(OP)
Can anyone suggest ideas as to what could be done to prevent gas coolers from clogging up. Process scernario: Hydrogen cyanide gas is formed in a reactor at 1500 C , sent to a cycolone to to remove soot within the HCN gas. The soot comes into the process into the reactors known as carbon graphite. The gas from the cyclone is then cooled by a gas cooler (fan operated). Any suggestions as how to stop fine particles of soot from entering the cooler??

RE: Gas coolers

Mech225,

Here are a few ideas you might consider.  I have worked with similar applications, except the stuff in the gas was fly ash.  I am assuming that the gas cooler has gas flowing through tubes.  Someone else might have ideas about how to eliminate the soot before the exchanger.

1.  Reconfigure the gas cooler with a vertical-down gas flow.  This will prevent the soot from settling in the tubes.  You may need a clean-out provision at the bottom.

2.  Use large diameter tubes.  They are less likely to plug.

3.  Keep the gas velocity high (say in the 50-100 ft/sec range) to further prevent soot settling.

Speco
