Plastic pipe test

Plastic pipe test

Plastic pipe test

(OP)
Hello,

I have been reading about plastic pipes for piping systems or pipeline but I am not sure about the test I have to carry out. So far I know there are two, the simple mechanical tensile test and the hydrostatic test; however I would like to know if someone could help to answer these couple of question.

1. - What additional testing would be needed if frequent pressure fluctuations were expected?

I think it is the hydrostatic test, is it right? What does it consist in?

2. - What does test qualify fibre glass piping for long time service for oil and field fluids?

I think it is the mechanical tensile test, is it right? What does it consist in?

Best wishes,

Howard

The Plastics Pipe Institute has a large number of documents freely available online at http://www.plasticpipe.org/applications/tech03_8_1.php

National and some international standards for plastic piping are listed in a 41-page document Standards For Plastics PipingTR – 5/2001,

Besides hydrostatic and other mechanical tests, there are chemical resistance tests. E.g., after 30 days immersion in ASTM Oil No. 3 at 23oC; the change in weight must be within +0.5 % to earn an ‘A’ rating.

RE: Plastic pipe test

It sounds like you're designing piping systems using plastic pipe and need to know the testing requirements for the system.  If that's the case, ASME B31.3 is probably the applicable code.

Note B31.3 also has design requirements plastic pipe systems must be held to.

RE: Plastic pipe test

You might also look at ISO 14692 or BS 7159 which deal specifically with fiberglass pipe.
