Can you weld and AISI 1141 cold drawn rod to ASTM A572 Gr. 50 plate?  If so what electrode, etc.?

RE: Welding AISI 1141 Rod

Fusion welding is not recommended on free machining steels.
Friction welding is possible on 1141 (not on 1144).

RE: Welding AISI 1141 Rod

Resulphurised steels are highly prone to hot tearing during hot forming and hot cracking during welding. You may wish to experiment by buttering a sample of the 1141 bar, to be used in production, with E7018 and confirm freedom from cracking. Then make the strength weld between the E7018 buttered bar and the plate. No guarantee that this will be successful though!!!

RE: Welding AISI 1141 Rod

Welding to any resulphurized steel is a problem and welding to a medium carbon steel is another problem. We were welding 1020 onto 1144 Stressproof and started having field failures. The fix was to change from Stressproof to 1050 and preheat the material to 300 degrees before welding.
