I've been told that, although setup equations were eventually derived for the asymmetrical rear suspension used on the early C-Type Jaguars, actual development was pretty much empirical. This has led me to envision that which I would call a "traction dyno." The idea would be to attach a centrally located chain, at C.G. height, to the car with the back end attached to something sturdy. With wheel scales under the front wheels, rear wheel loads could then be calculated when the chain was loaded statically. The chain tension, of course, would simulate the inertial load during acceleration. It would not be necessary to power the engine. A "come-along" could be used on the chain with the engine locked (i.e., not allowed to rotate).

Has anyone used this sort of thing?
