ASHRAE Standards

ASHRAE Standards

ASHRAE Standards

(OP)
Let me preface this question with the full knowledge that it is broad and yet not meant to be exclusive for all cases. There appears to be many ASHRAE standards in place for the design of new or existing buildings. Some apply for minimum energy efficiency ASHRAE 90.1-89, others for indoor air quality ASHRAE 62, and yet others for :

ASHRAE Guideline 13, Specifying Direct Digital Control Systems
ANSI/ASHRAE 15, Safety Code for Refrigeration Systems
ANSI/ASHRAE 34, Number Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants
ANSI/ASHRAE 35, Method of Testing Desiccants for Refrigerant Drying
ANSI/ASHRAE 62, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality*
ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings
ANSI/ASHRAE 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of New Low-Rise Residential Buildings
ANSI/ASHRAE 126, Methods of Testing HVAC Air Ducts
ANSI/ASHRAE 135, BACnet® - A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks

My question is simple: Are the above standards the most important ones I should focus on staying current in relation to my occupation as an engineer designing commerical and industrial facilities?

Thanks and anyone that would like to give their opinion on the ranking of these important standards will be appreciated also!

RE: ASHRAE Standards

gilla

"Are the above standards the most important ones". They are if you designing a building that they would apply,

"I should focus on staying current in relation to my occupation as an engineer designing commerical and industrial facilities"? Yes, in all cases, But you don't have to memorize them ...only have to know how to access them if the need arises.

RE: ASHRAE Standards

Unfortunately ASHRAE standards are not the only governing
documents, look into the following...and this list still
doesn't cover everything:

ANSI    American National Standards Institute
ASME    American Society of Mechanical Engineers
FM    Factory Mutual Systems Guidelines
UL    Underwriter’s Laboratories
ACGIH    American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists
SMACNA    Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association
OSHA    Occupational Safety and Health Administration
BOCA National Building Code
Mechanical Subcode: BOCA National Mechanical Code, 6
National Electrical Code
