Distributed Control Systems - DeviceNet & SDS

(OP)

Here's my problem: I have an ABB DeviceNET controller, but I have Honeywell SDS cables, connectors, hubs, sensors and actuators.

I do know that Both DeviceNET and SDS use the CAN protocol.

My Questions: Can I somehow use the DeviceNET controller with the SDS cabling, sensors and actuators?. Will I need to purchase additional modules?

Are the signal levels the same for the sensors etc.. for the Honeywell system as they would be for ABB sensors, just a matter of getting the proper connectors?

I have the list of SDS devices if you need to know which ones.

Thank you for any help

RE: Distributed Control Systems - DeviceNet & SDS

I don't believe SDS and DeviceNET are compatible in either their signal levels or physical media.  While not having worked with SDS, I found that I could make large deviations in the physical media of DeviceNET and it still worked.  Don't expect to get the same speed or distance if you use a different media, though.

RE: Distributed Control Systems - DeviceNet & SDS

Allen-Bradley has proprietary protocol on CAN for DeviceNet and SDS will not work with it.  A-B does have quite a few protocol converters available,  however.  Suggest you call their technical support 1-440-464-5800 and tell them your problem.

RE: Distributed Control Systems - DeviceNet & SDS

Ohmboy:
the protocol can bought by anybody who wants to produce compatible products, although AB may their own version which may have proprietary components to it.
