Any one has experience treating Fe and Mn using pyrolusite filtration. I am using it in one of my drinking water wells. We are finding breakthroughs happening in short periods of time. We have sanding problems at the well, am wondering if that has anything to do with this. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks, Sunil

Are you doing any pretreatment (sedimentation, permanganate, aeration, etc.)?  What percentage of pyrolucite do you have in the sand?  What thickness of filter media (sand and anthracite?)do you have?

What levels of Fe & Mn do you have?

By sanding do you mean pumping sand?

I've got pyrolucite (manganese dioxide) in several plants at various percentages (10% to 30%).

I have aeration, sedimentation preceding the sand/anthracite filters in all of the plants.  What I've found so far (in my humble opinion) is that the pyrolucite really helps on startup more than anything.  My reasoning is that some of my plants which were constructed with only sand/anthracite filters have developed a manganese dioxide coating on the filter media over time.

I can't say that the pyrolucite improves treatment that much over conventional treatment after the filters have aged.

Unless you have really low levels of Fe/Mn you should have some sort of pretreatment (at least permanganate) prior to the filtration.

What is the size of the filter, square feet?
What is the flow of water, gal per minute?
What is the Fe and Mn in the filtered water at the start of a filter run?
How many gallons treated before, you are experiencing breakthrough?
What is the oxidizer used, air, Chlorine, Permanganate?
Is a coagulant or flocculation aid used prior to the filter?
