Major Repair to Aircraft Engine components

Major Repair to Aircraft Engine components

Major Repair to Aircraft Engine components

(OP)
An age old question. What would be considered a major engine repair?

I have read and understand CFR 14 part 1, but was hoping to get a few of you to give me some specific examples.

Is thermal spray major? Is welding major? Is brazing major? How about non conventional weld, just a few questions.

Would someone be kind enough to start a discussion

Sincerely

Honest John

RE: Major Repair to Aircraft Engine components

Major repairs to power plants are covered in CFR 14 part 43 Appendix A. Under (b)(2)(iii)it lists the following as major repairs: "special repairs to structural engine parts by welding, plating, metalizing, or other methods." CFR 14 part 33.4 and Appendix A "instructions for continued airworthiness" says that TCH must provide manuals. Included in an engine overhaul manual will be what is considered structural and must have means of repair if repairable. See also AC 33.4-1 and AC 33-6 for further info.

The above is assuming no special repair authorization to CFR 14 part 145 or SFAR 36, TC's, LTC's etc. It is unlikely that thermal spraying and non conventional welding that is not covered in OEM's manual will be worth the expense for non structual parts. Brazing, in the form of silver solder, is comonly done and it is not a major repair. Welding of weldable, non structable parts would not be major.
