Caisson Design information

Caisson Design information

I am looking for information/design guides on caisson design. We are using a caisson to build a pumping station, so it will be reinforced concrete. Just wondering if anyone knows of any good resources or books. Thanks.

RE: Caisson Design information

ACI 336 - Drilled Piers is perhaps one of the best overall treatments of drilled piers (caissons).

Another interesting reference is

Standard Handbook of Heavy Construction, 3d ed.
O'Brien, Havers, Stubbs
Mc Graw Hill

The U.S. FHWA has a great pair of paperback books - one on design, the other on construction.  They were authored by Lymon Reese and Mike O'Neill; this is a "must have" part of your library if you do much drilled pier (caisson, bored pile) design and/or construction work.

Another good reference:

"Drilled Pier Foundations" by Woodward, Gardner and Greer

RE: Caisson Design information

Bowles' Foundation Analysis and Design (ISBN 0-07-114811-6) has some good material too.

RE: Caisson Design information

hi kbrhea, i am bridgedesigner.
you can consult foundation design by teng, foundation analysis and design by bowles, or the book from braja m. das.

RE: Caisson Design information

While Bowles' and Das' books are quite popular, they are pretty general.  The other references are more complete, and will serve you better in the long run.

By the way, how will the caissons be used?

RE: Caisson Design information

Is this a pneumatic caisson?  That is where you build a shell and sink the structure by having workers excavate in a pressurized chamber.

RE: Caisson Design information

I'll say it again - M.J. Tomlinson's books.  He has one on Pile Design and Construction and one on Foundation Design and Construction.  Even the later one has good sections on bored piled foundations.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. I am going to pass along the information to the engineer in charge, they just asked me to do a little internet searching to see what was out there on caisson design. Basically from what I understand, the caisson will make up the bottom of the pumping station. I don't think it is a pneumatic caisson.
