Flued Openings

Flued Openings

Flued Openings

(OP)
ASME Sec. VIII, Div 1:

I have a flued opening per UG-38 and wish to attach a through nozzle by a single fillet weld.  I am not aware of this configuration in UW-16. Is there somewhere else I ought to be looking?

Cheers,
WRW

RE: Flued Openings

I've never see your proposed configuration before but I would be extremely leery of it due to moments in every direction.   Check the following website.

RE: Flued Openings

depends on the size of the nozzle diameter in/out
ussually if it is greater than 3NPS youneed calculations/compensation/shear loadings calcs and ussually a groove and fillet weld. you can make it from one side if full penetration as well.

Thanks to ER and unclesyd~

What I am wondering is:
a) the basis of design (weld sizing) for a joint which looks like fig. UW-13.1(e) (I know this joint shown is for a head to shell - just using it to clarify what I want my nozzle to look like).

and b) what paragraph can I use in UW-16 to justify it.

cheers,
WRW
