Auto-dimensioning using relations in SW2003

Auto-dimensioning using relations in SW2003

Auto-dimensioning using relations in SW2003

(OP)
I often draw parts that have bolt patterns of equal diameter holes. So, I've been drawing one circle, locating it, then using the Linear Sketch Step and Repeat to lay out the rest. Works well for the sketch. However, I always have to manually enter in the "4X" or whatever notation to show that all holes are indeed the same diameter, and it does not seem to create dimensions that can automatically be inserted into the drawing document. Do I have an option unchecked? Is there a simpler way to do this? It's mostly me being lazy when it comes time to make the drawing, but it seems like since this information has already been entered I should be able to use it, instead of creating what seems like redundant features. Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Auto-dimensioning using relations in SW2003

For starters, I would STRONGLY suggest using a circular FEATURE pattern instead of a step and repeat within a sketch (if possible in your instance).

Feature patterns have numerous advantages over sktech step and repeats including less rebuild time and easier component patterning in the assembly.

Plus (more to your original question), in the drawing, you can make an annotation like the 4X that references the pattern number.

Something to look into is - Dimension Favorties - That's a nice feature that might work for you so you don't have to continue to repaet the same type of dimension over and over again.

RE: Auto-dimensioning using relations in SW2003

I compared feature patterns to patterns in sketches in SW2003.  Patterns in sketches didn't provide a dimension to control number of instance (instances could still be controlled by editing the pattern, though).

One thing I sometimes do with slot and chamfer dimensions is combine the dimensions in a custom property, then use the custom property in a note attached to the feature.  You could do the same with the dimensions for hole diameter and number of instances (if you use feature patterns instead of sketch patterns).
