ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

(OP)
Hey there,

I just got a new computer at work, with Windows XP Professional loaded.  I installed Mechanical Desktop 5, and I have a problem.

Whenever I open or save a drawing in AutoCad, the dialog box comes up with all the files in "icon" view.  In order to be able to navigate through and find the file I want, I hav eto change the view to "list", which is what I prefer.  Prior to this, I ran Windows 2000 Pro, and the view was always "list".

I have configured my folder options in Windows to be "list", as that is what I prefer.  All other windows applications and other software list the files the way I prefer.  All except AutoCAD.

Does anyone know of a way to make AutoCAD default to a "list" format rather than the current "icon"?  Perhaps a variable command somewhere that I am not aware of?  Of is this just a glitch between AC2000 and WinXP?

We are upgrading (finally) to AC2004 within a month, so hopefully this will not be an issue then.  In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thank You.

RE: ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

It seems Acad doesn't recognize the XP setting.
However, in your Acad "open" dialog box, there should be a dropdown at the upper right that says "view" and you can set it in there to list, details, etc.

RE: ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

Windows XP with AutoCad 2000i - The view is reset to preview every time.
The AutoCad web site siad this a design feature :) and cannot be changed to default to list.

Hopefully you already upgraded because today was the last day to upgrade ACAD 2000-based products (ACAD 2000 is being "retired").

From Autodesk Website:
"Autodesk will discontinue service and support for AutoCAD 2000, the full line of AutoCAD 2000-based products, and Autodesk Inventor 4 on January 15, 2004."

RE: ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

Whatever you do, stay away from any Acad/XP combination. After a year of problems too numerous to mention I found that Win 2000 Pro is more stable compared to the default resource drain of XP. Extensive research from newsgroups and articles indicated that most Cad users worth their salt have also made this choice. Good Luck.

RE: ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

PeterG2000 - I am happy to report excellent results with XP PRO at work and at home with Acad2000 and Acad2004.  I highly recommend the combination.  I work in 2D and 3D with my 3D models upwards of 20Mb.

I would recomend strongly against Xp Home.

Perhaps I just am lucky?

RE: ACad 2000 & Windows XP problem

I for one have always tweaked Windows prior to installing any applications.  One of the first things I typically will do is go into Windows Explorer and change the File/Folder Options as the defaults are not set (IMHO) the way I need them to work.  I will typically get the one folder set the way I want (details with the file extensions showing, full path and file name displayed, etc.) and then Apply to all folders.

And then installing my applications.  I have never had a problem with AutoCAD (or any other applications) File dialog boxes by doing it this way rather than trying to change them after the fact.

As stated below, making the change in any of AutoCAD's File dialog boxes are not retained... so I am assuming they are set and remain as ther were set up when installed.

BTW I highly recommend both AutoCAD 2004 running on XP Pro.

View setting in Select File dialog box is not retained

Published date: 2001-12-06

Applies to:
AutoCAD® 2002
AutoCAD® 2000i
AutoCAD® 2000
AutoCAD LT® 2002
AutoCAD LT® 2000i
AutoCAD LT® 2000

Issue

On the File menu, you click Open. In the Select File dialog box in the Views drop-down list, the view type always reverts to List in a new session of AutoCAD, even after you changed the view type to Details

Solution

This is as designed; there is no way to retain the setting.
