MACT vs RACT regulations

MACT vs RACT regulations

MACT vs RACT regulations

(OP)
What is the difference between the EPA terms MACT and RACT?
I know acronyms stand for...
MACT = Maximum Achievable Control Technology and
RACT = Reasonably Achievable Control Technology

But practically, what is the difference to a plant owner/operator?

RE: MACT vs RACT regulations

MACT = MAximum CosT

RE: MACT vs RACT regulations

MACT only comes into play if your process is covered under section 112 of the Clean Air Act.  The 1990 modifications set up various industrial groups and would eventually issue MACT regulations for that industry.  MACT is the emission levels from control technology of the best controlled 12% of the industry.  It becomes a Command and Control type of regulation.

RACT is less stringent and is implemented in non attainment areas, typically for NOx and SOx.
