Bar Stock???

Bar Stock???

Bar Stock???

(OP)
I need 10' of (3/4")/(3/8") square steel bars. I will cut it into 4 28" bars, which will support 75LBs of pressure each. I will drill a 1/2" axle hole at the tip of each bar. The load will be mounted via 4 1/4" holes for some steel bolts.

I have tried for a month to find bar stock. Nobody has metal this thick. I'm in NYC, but I will order from anywhere. I've tried Home Depot..local metal shops...machinists...welders.  People look at me like I'm crazy. How much should this cost?

RE: Bar Stock???

You haven’t looked the right places & I’m surprised some machinist didn’t sell you some off his raw materials rack.  I can get bar stock up to 4x6” cross-section no problem.

1018 Carbon Steel Rectangle 3/8" Thick, 3/4" Width, 6' Length
$ 13.82 Each

McMaster-Carr is quick and convenient although pricey. They have a New Brunswick, NJ branch (sales: (732) 329-3200), so you should have quick delivery.

I would like to thank you all for your prompt responses!! Way to go!! ;)

I'm being asked what type of stainless steel I need. I told them 303 cause I don't know what I need. Each 26" 3/4 by 3/8 bar should be able to support 160LBS. It will be used near water in New York city. I assume I can protect the metal with paint.

I'm building off-road skates. Two 26" bars will have 1/2" axles drilled into them for the two wheels that will be attached to the ends of the 2 bars. A skate boot will be mounted to the center of the 2 bars via 4 1/4" holes for 4, 4" bolts. This device may come into direct contact with salt water from the ocean on ocassion, but this can be avoided if nessasary.
