Fire and Gas/Smoke Detectors

(OP)
Hi All,
I am currently handling a project concerning Detecors(such as Fire & Gas, Smoke, Thermal, Sprinklers). I need to design a format that will make use of current international standards on Detecors. Hence I need information and or articles to read and forge ahead so that we can all do it together. Thanks to Eng-Tips forum for the initiative of creating such an opportunity. Can anyone help Please?
Best regards,
Floppy1

RE: Fire and Gas/Smoke Detectors

I am not sure what exactly you mean by 'design format' but NFPA has been almost exlusively accepted fire detection and protection standard in the USA and I am sure widely accepted by other countried and regions. It is so detailed and backed by detaled reasearch that to replace it with something else is next to impossible.

You may wish to strat out by reading up NFPA 72, 20 and 13 to begin with and then get to each referenced document or standard referred therein. Check out their websites. The fire detection design does not deviate much from the recommendations included in the relavant NFPA standards.

RE: Fire and Gas/Smoke Detectors

There is the "Training manual on fire alarm systems" from NEMA, a copy was given to me by a fire alarm systems vendor, you may try to ask for this document from a vendor or try to find it in the net which comes from NEMA (also refered as NEMA SB 4).

RE: Fire and Gas/Smoke Detectors

It is correct that NFPA 72, 20 and 13 will help you and you will also want to refer to IFC International Fire Code as well. IFC will help you determine what type of system you will need and NFPA 72 will help you with more of the details. First you will need to know the type and occupancy of your building and you may not even need gas detection. When you do have that information you can determine if you need flame detection or a typical system. Many times it is prudent to ask fire alarm contractors directly for advice since they have more experience installing and using the systems than the designers.
