Wave / Promotion

Wave / Promotion

Wave / Promotion

(OP)

Hi

what is the difference between wave and promotion,
I dont find any major difference between them
when we will use wave and when promotion ?
Is wave a replacement for promotion ?

regards,
Karthikeyan.J

RE: Wave / Promotion

My experience is that wave is more flexible than promotion. You have the possibility to use timestamp with wave and it´s easier to choose type of element to link while the promote is more like linking to the model. But there are some things about promote that I´ve noticed that aren´t good, if you use it in a boolean operation it will always become target body thus if the model promoted gets large changes meaning replacing the original solid your other model will collaps.

This is based on experiance and not litteratur so if anybody has a sain and easy explanation please chip in.

RE: Wave / Promotion

Promote was introduced first to allow assemble level features; adding new features after assembly. Wave was introduced later and has mode functionality.

We use promotions for taking an assembly and adding machining features to it.
We use Wave for matching complex surfaces for mating components.

RE: Wave / Promotion

Hi Karthikeyan,

Ben makes a good comparison. To reinforce it, consider how each function is treated: when Promoting a component, the base will automatically be hidden in the assembly for you. This works prefectly when adding assembly level machining.

Wave linking does not automatically hide their sources. This is appropriate when linking data between components but can be a liabilty when linking entire bodies for say assembly level machining. Still, as Azrael points out, Wave links can be more flexible, and so they should not be ruled out if Promotions cause problems.

For more information, see the Assembly Best Practice sections of the on-line help.

Cheers,
