would it be
^C^C-la;LO;"layer name";    LOCK LAYER
^C^C-la;U;"layer name";     UNLOCK LAYER
^C^C-la;ON;"layer name";    LAYER ON
^C^C-la;OFF;"layer name";   LAYER OFF

RE: ? about a macro ?

The bonus utilities in R14 (and express tools in 2000) include these routines.  If you have Acad 2000 but don't have the express tools, take a look at the thread "Using Bonus Menus from AutoCAD R14 in version 2000i."

No problem - you can get the layer freeze version from http://www.cadinfo.net/lisplib.htm . Look for FRZLAYER.lsp in the layer section.  You can easily modify this simple routine to handle turning layers off and locking and unlocking as well.  I would also suggest creating a command button or keyboard shortcut to turn all layers back on (I use this all the time).
