12volt motor speed controller

12volt motor speed controller

(OP)
I have a 12v automotive starter I am using for a drive motor on a kart but have no way of controlling it yet. it pulls an initial load of 250amps and decreases to aprox 100amps after a couple seconds. i'm using a 70a/h SLA battery. what I need is a controller that doesn't have all the extras on it(braking,reverse.etc). something simple that will decrease amperage so my batteries will last longer and hopefully increase motor life. most controllers I have found so far are listed as 24-48volts very few are listed 12v. similar to golf karts. is it possible that I use a controller to drop amperage to 60-70 amps without damaging the motor? or does the controller control voltage?

RE: 12volt motor speed controller

The simplest is to use N-channel MOSFET to pulse width modulate the input. ( if the voltage is on 50% of the time
it is equivalent with .50* 12V = 6V )

You should be able to find a simple square wave generator schematic at Radio Shack.  If you have a local electronics store (not Radio Shack) where TV techs buy supplies you could probably get someone there to bread board one for you cheap.

RE: 12volt motor speed controller

Hi, you wont get very far with this kind of motor, you need something like a golf cart motor.
