I'm using an Excel document to control variables in a number of different SE documents. The advantage is to have one location to make changes rather than updating variable tables in a number of different assemblies and parts. Everything worked fine until I inserted a row in the top of my Excel spreadsheet. All the SE variables are now looking at the wrong cell in the Excel spreadsheet. Is there a setting or method to prevent this from happening? If my spreadsheet has to be perfect and unchangeable from the start then this feature is not as useful as I was hoping.

All I can suggest is that you leave yourself some buffer area around the data in your spreadsheet (extra rows and columns above and to the left respectively), that way if you need to add some information above (or beside) you have the columns available already.
If you need to get your SE variables looking at the proper cells again, just delete your row that you added. Everything should reference properly after that.

So you can format the datasheet as ypu like without changing the link information to Solid Edge
