UL Panel Shop Certification

UL Panel Shop Certification

(OP)
Can any one tell me how and where a panel integrator shop can be certified with UL508 type listing? As an Overseas Bypass manufacturer, we want to become a UL certified panel shop to assist our valued customers in the US. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

KIMATEK:  Of course UL is an organization set up to extract lots of money under the guise of saftey... So.. To get "UL panel shop" certification get out your wallet and contact UL.  Essentially you take several short courses from them,(which you pay for), where they go over what is required.  Then... well, here is their web site link to being a panel shop, check it out.

Thank you very much for your lead.

To be a cost effective yet flexible manufacturer of Drives and Panels, I may have to get my wallet out to be vaccumed.
In future, if I can be any assistance to you please let me know (dsp@kimatek.com). Thank you again.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

There are alternatives to UL that provide the same certifications / testing as UL. One such agency is found at the following link:

http://www.metlabs.com/

Also, there is a thread somewhere in this forum discussing this same issue.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Suggestion: It is necessary to have a product UL listed not the shop. See catalogs for samples how the UL listing or recognition is presented in catalogs.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Suggestion: If the UL listing is not required specifically, any Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory will do. Visit
http://www.osha.gov/dts/otpca/nrtl/
etc. for more info

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Kimatek: I may....   jabartos and amptramp are correct there are other "labs" I've used FM labs (Factory Mutual) in the past to good effect.  I can explain in detail the listing of an electrical/electronic control device but u did state UL panel shop which is of course different.

Thank you gentlemen for your advices. Yes, UL Panel Shop is the goal. It is to be able to slap a UL mark ourselves on a Bypass panel which has UL components and enclosures, instead of attempting to get UL certification for every panel we are to produce.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Suggestion to the previous posting: Each and every panel that is different from other already UL labeled panels will have to have its own UL file to bear its UL label. This is because different panels require different testing.

Thank you for your advices.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Jbartos, you are wrong about that. UL508c, the listing for custom assemblies, is EXACTLY what he needs. You are referring to UL508a, listing of standard manufactured products.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Well I believe you are wrong jraef. Any panel that is different from one previously listed requires it to be re-evaluated. This is the idea around being a UL panel shop. You have shown that you know what your doing and understand the requirements. This allows the panel shop to certify their panels on their own. The only requirement is the test data has to be sent to UL. This is standard UL508. UL508A is for single pieces of a panel or other industrial control system. UL508A can have components listed (no other requirements) or recognized (requires additional considerations in the final installation to be listed). One note: just because all components used are UL listed or recognized does not mean the panel is automatically UL listed. This is a wide spread misconception. As far as UL508C, I am not familiar with that standard.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Suggestion: Visit
http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe.jsp?query=%22ul...
etc. for more info on the "Become a UL Listed Panel Shop"
This UL standard would cover the Panel Shop production to be UL listed; however, UL508a will still have to be implemented by the UL Listed Panel Shop. Evidently, the UL label has to get on the product somewhere as a result of the product testing and conformance with the specific UL standard pertaining to the specific product, which would be UL 508a.

RE: UL Panel Shop Certification

Oops! Got my standards backwards. UL508A=panel, UL508=components.
