Liquid flow rate in a partially filled pipe.

Liquid flow rate in a partially filled pipe.

(OP)
Dear All,

I'm looking for some advice on the correct formula to use for liquid flow rate caluations in a partially filled pipe.

I have used this formula.

Mass flow rate  = (density)^2 g (with of cord) (height of film in pipe)^3  sin (fall angle)  /  (3 * visocity)

And adapted it to assume a circular pipe.  I'm looking at a header which accumualates liquid - can anyone advise or give me a reference for a more suitable formula.  I've check most books and not found much.

Try

it just may be of help.

Hydraulic formulas for flow in channels can be found in Kempe's Engineers Year-Book (1987) (Morgan-Grampian) pages B1/19+.

Good luck.

RE: Liquid flow rate in a partially filled pipe.

If you have a copy of Crane's flow of fluids booklet or have access to one, look in there.  They go through how to estimate flow through non-circular channels which would apply to a partially full pipe.

RE: Liquid flow rate in a partially filled pipe.

Perry's 5th Ed. has a section on open channel (i.e. partially filled) flow.  It has the Chezy and Manning formula, and it has several references that may be more pertinent to your situation.

Good luck,
Latexman
